In December 1966 - after numerous discussions since July 1965 - four artists, Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni, wishing to test the limits of painting, decided to organize together a series of "Manifestations" the first of which will take place at the time of the "18e Salon de La Jeune Peinture."

A handwritten and/or typed invitation - signed by the four artists, is sent by postal service to some friends, museums, galleries, journalists, magazines and diverse acquaintances, as of December 25, 1966 - accompanied by a printed flier, dated January 1, 1967, which will also be distributed at the opening of the show on January 3, 1967.

During this event, Buren, Mosset, Parmentier, Toroni, together in the same room, paint their works before the public and, as they are completed, hang them up from the mouldings in the room. The number of works completed by each artist differs according to their own rhythm: around a half-dozen for Daniel Buren, of which two or three were cut up into pieces. and incorporated into subsequent works.

At the same time, there is spread non-stop all day long, from a loud speaker turned up to the highest volume, a text recorded on audio cassette in, successively, French, Spanish and English: BUREN MOSSET, PARMENTIER, TORONI ADVISE YOU TO BECOME INTELLIGENT.

Before the end of the show's opening event, Buren, Mosset, Parmentier, Toroni, take down their paintings and replace them by a banner which will remain until the end of the show: "Buren, Mosset, Parmentier, Toroni are not exhibiting" and leave the exhibition.

In the catalogue of the exhibition, with the name of each artist is included equally that of the other three.

In Paris, 11, Avenue President Wilson, we are offering, at a demonstration, first of a series, not only to give evidence of our activity, but especially to have the method in which it is done observed, by working for five hours in public.

Thinking that this fact may interest you, we hope to have you as a witness at one of these demonstrations which will take place in the coming months and about which we take the liberty to inform you.

Be assured, Sir, of our best wishes.

Since painting is a game.
Since painting is harmonizing, or not, of colors.
Since painting is applying (consciously or not) rules of composition.
Since painting is emphasizing gesture.
Since painting is representing the surroundings (or interpreting them or appropriating them or contesting them or presenting them).
Since painting is offering a trampoline for the imagination.
Since painting is illustrating the inner self.
Since painting is a justification.
Since painting is useful for something.
Since painting is painting taking into consideration aesthetics, flowers, females, eroticism, the daily environment, on art, dada, on surrealism, on the war in Vietnam.
