"Manifestation 3"

Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Centre expérimental du spectacle (théâtre)

Paris,

June 2 1967 à 21 H

Exposition de groupe

The end of May, 1967, posters pasted up on the walls of Paris, showing close-ups of the faces of Buren, Mosset, Parmentier, Toroni - like "wanted" posters - , and handwritten invitations signed by the four artists, invite the public to "Manifestation 3", on June 2, at 9 p.m. at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Entrance fee: 5 F.

There, at the museum, before the arrival of the public, four square paintings, each of the same dimensions, one by each artist, are hung together to form one large square. The spectators wait for around 45 minutes for a performance that is supposedly to take place. Among them are Marcel Duchamp, Otto Hahn, Jackie Monnier, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Niki de Saint-Phalle.

The only "performance" consisted in looking at the works on display; proposition underlined in the printed flier signed Buren-Mosset-Parmentier-Toroni, and distributed to the spectators on leaving:

Printed flier.

It is a question, obviously, of nothing but looking at the canvases of BUREN-MOSSET-PARMENTIER-TORONI
One should see:
A canvas measuring 2.50 m x 2.50 m. divided into 29 equal and vertical, red and white stripes, of which the two end ones are covered over with white. (BUREN).

A black circle (1) in the center of a (2) white canvas. (MOSSET).

On a canvas measuring 2.50 m x 2.50 m, horizontal alternating gray (3) and white (4) stripes, each 0.38 m x 2.50 m.
The seventh (and last) stripe is only a partial stripe measuring 0.22 m x 2.50 m. (Parmentier).

85 blue brush strokes made with a flat #50 paint brush, at 30 cm. intervals, on a white surface measuring 2.50 m x 2.50 m. (TORONI).

THAT WAS MANIFESTATION 3.

June 2, 1967

BUREN-MOSSET-PARMENTIER-TORONI.

(1) interior diameter 4.5 cm, exterior diameter, 7.8 cm.
(2) 2.50 m x 2.50 m.
(3) Krylon dark dove gray
(4) Lefranc cellulose white
